Embarking on a road trip from the UK to Skiathos offers a unique blend of adventure, stunning landscapes, and cultural experiences. This journey takes you across multiple countries, through diverse terrains, and finally to the sparkling Aegean Sea surrounding Skiathos. If you crave a travel experience that combines the thrill of the open road with the charm of a Greek island, this trip is for you. Libby and I are in the privileged position that we can undertake this journey each year to be able to open The Old Port House Bar in Skiathos Town.

Planning The Route

The drive from the UK to Skiathos covers approximately 2,000 miles, depending on your exact starting point and chosen path although this can be reduced to around 1200 road miles by using ferries .The most common route takes you through the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Greece, with a ferry crossing to reach Skiathos.

Key Stops Along the Way

  • Hull to Rotterdam: P & O operate a very efficient over night ferry service.

  • Rotterdam to Frankfurt:

  • Frankfurt to Lindau:

  • Lindau to Lake Como:

  • Lake Como to Florence:

  • Florence to Ancona

  • Ancona to Igoumenitsa:

  • Igoumenitsa to Meteora

  • Meteora to Volos

  • Volos to Skiathos

Ferry Options

  • Ancona to Igoumenitsa: This ferry route is popular for travellers heading to northern Greece. It takes about 16 hours, so booking a cabin for overnight travel is recommended.

  • Alternative routes: You can also drive through the Balkans or take ferries from other Italian ports, but the Ancona-Igoumenitsa route is the most straightforward.

Preparing Your Vehicle and Documents

Before setting off, ensure your vehicle is ready for a long journey:

  • Check tires, brakes, and fluids to avoid breakdowns.

  • Carry a valid driving license recognized in all countries on your route.

  • International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required depending on your nationality.

  • Vehicle insurance should cover all countries you will pass through.

  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or equivalent travel insurance is essential.

  • Apply for vignettes if travelling through Austria or Switzerland and clean air zones in Germany and France.

Pack an emergency kit including a first aid kit, reflective jackets, warning triangles, and spare bulbs, as these are mandatory in many European countries. Also consider if you are required to carry snow chains or similar depending on the time of year and the countries you are travelling through.

Highlights of the Drive Through Europe

France: Scenic Countryside and Historic Towns

Driving through France offers picturesque views of rolling vineyards and charming villages. The A6 motorway, known as the Autoroute du Soleil, leads you south towards the Mediterranean. Stop in towns like Beaune or Avignon to enjoy local wines and historic sites.

Italy: Lakes, Mountains, and Coastal Beauty

Crossing into Italy, the landscape changes dramatically. The Italian Lakes region near Milan is breath taking, with crystal-clear waters surrounded by mountains. Continue south to the Adriatic coast, where you’ll board the ferry. Italian cuisine along the way is a highlight, so take time to savour regional dishes like risotto or fresh seafood.

Greece: From Mainland to Island Paradise

Once in Greece, the drive takes you through rugged mountains and olive groves. The road to Skiathos involves a ferry crossing from the mainland port of Volos or Agios Konstantinos to the island itself. Skiathos is known for its pine-covered hills, sandy beaches, and vibrant nightlife.

What to Expect on Skiathos

Skiathos is a small island but packed with natural beauty and activities:

  • Beaches: Koukounaries Beach is famous for its golden sand and clear water. Lalaria Beach, accessible only by boat, offers stunning white pebbles and turquoise waters.

  • Town life: Skiathos Town has narrow streets filled with shops, tavernas, and cafes. It’s lively yet retains a relaxed island atmosphere.

  • Outdoor activities: Hiking trails lead through pine forests to secluded beaches. Water sports like kayaking and snorkelling are popular.

  • Local cuisine: Try fresh seafood dishes, Greek salads, and local wines.

Tips for a Smooth Road Trip Experience

  • Plan your driving hours to avoid fatigue. Driving no more than 6-7 hours a day keeps the trip enjoyable.

  • Book ferries and accommodations in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.

  • Use GPS and offline maps to navigate areas with limited signal.

  • Keep local currency handy for tolls, small shops, and ferry tickets.

  • Respect local driving laws, such as speed limits and road signs, which vary by country.
